US Retailer Offers Indian ‘Jhola’ Bag for ₹4,100, Faces Ridicule

Break10 Web Desk: An American luxury retailer, Nordstrom, has come under scrutiny for listing a traditional Indian ‘jhola’ bag—a simple cotton tote commonly used in India—for approximately ₹4,100 ($48). The item, often available in Indian markets for less than ₹100 or even given away for free, has been marketed as a ‘woven tote’, sparking widespread criticism and discussions on cultural appropriation and commercialisation of traditional items.

The bag in question, produced by Japanese company Puebco, is labeled as an ‘Indian Souvenir Bag’. The design closely resembles the ubiquitous ‘jhola’ bags used by everyday shoppers across India. The stark price difference and rebranding have led many to question the ethics behind such practices.

Social media platforms have been abuzz with reactions. Users expressed disbelief and humour, with some noting they have multiple similar bags at home and jestingly considering selling them as luxury items. Businessman Harsh Goenka also commented on the situation, highlighting the irony of non-resident Indians (NRIs) paying premium price for common Indian items abroad.

This incident is not isolated. Previously, luxury brand Balenciaga faced similar backlash for selling a bag resembling the Indian ‘thaila’ for ₹1.5 lakh ($2,000), leading to widespread online ridicule.

The controversy underscores ongoing debates about cultural appropriation and the commodification of traditional items. While some argue that such practices bring global recognition to local crafts, others contend that they exploit cultural symbols without proper acknowledgment or fair compensation to the original communities.
