Taliban Supreme Leader Proclaims “Democracy is Dead”, Declares Western Laws Unnecessary
Break10 Web Desk: Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, in a recent sermon marking the Islamic holiday of Eid Al-Fitr, asserted that Afghanistan has no need for Western laws. He declared, “democracy is dead” under the implementation of Islamic law or Sharia. The 50-minute address was delivered at a Kandahar mosque and later disseminated on social media by senior Taliban leader Zabihullah Mujahid.
Akhundzada emphasised on the primacy of Sharia and said, “There is no need for laws that originate from the West. We will create our own laws.” He criticised Western countries for their perceived hostility toward Islam and referenced ongoing global conflicts as evidence of a united front against Muslim communities.

The Taliban, since its return to power in August 2021, has enforced a stringent interpretation of Islamic law leading to significant restrictions on women’s rights. Women and girls have been barred from education beyond the sixth grade, excluded from many public spaces, and prohibited from most forms of employment. These measures have drawn international condemnation and further isolated Afghanistan on the world stage.
Akhundzada—notwithstanding internal criticisms and calls from some Taliban officials for greater engagement with the international community—has maintained a hardline stance. He claimed, supporters of democracy are attempting to alienate the Afghan people from the Taliban government, reinforcing his commitment to governance strictly aligned with his interpretation of Islamic principles.
