Chinese Woman Turns Workplace Toilet into Home

Break10 Web Desk: In what has stunned Chinese people and sparked debate over housing affordability, a woman in China has reportedly been living inside a workplace toilet for nearly a year now, in an extreme effort to save money.

According to reports, the woman, believed to be in her late 20s, transformed a small, seldom-used restroom at her office into a makeshift home. Colleagues became suspicious when she was frequently spotted late at night and early in the morning around the building. Upon further investigation, they discovered that she had been secretly living in the toilet cubicle, complete with bedding, toiletries, and even a small hot plate for cooking.

The woman, who has not been publicly identified, allegedly took the drastic measure because of the rising cost of living in her city, where average rent prices have surged far beyond the reach of many young workers.

“I just couldn’t afford rent anymore,” she reportedly told a coworker. “It’s either save money like this or go into debt.”

The company management claimed that they were unaware of her situation and expressed concern over the incident. The company is carrying out an internal review.

Reactions so far have been mixed. Some users praised her resourcefulness and determination, while  others criticized the move as unhygienic and inappropriate.

The incident story has reignited discussions about affordable housing, urban inequality, and the growing financial burden on China’s younger generations, many of whom face stagnant wages amid soaring costs.

The woman has since vacated the restroom after the news broke. Her situation continues to highlight the lengths some people are willing to go to in order to stay afloat in one of the world’s fastest-growing—and increasingly expensive—economies.
