Helen Mirren Slams James Bond Series as Profoundly Sexist

Break10 Web Desk: Academy Award winner Helen Mirren has voiced her opposition to the idea of a female James Bond. She cited the franchise’s inherent sexism as a fundamental issue. In a recent interview, the 79-year-old actor expressed her longstanding discomfort with the portrayal of women in the James Bond franchise. She said, “I never liked James Bond. I never liked the way women were in James Bond. The whole concept of James Bond is drenched and born out of profound sexism.”

Mirren emphasised that women have historically played significant and courageous roles in intelligence services. She highlighted their contributions during the French Resistance. Mirren advocated for the creation of films that tell authentic stories about these extraordinary women rather than reimagining traditionally male characters. “Women have always been a major and incredibly important part of the Secret Service. They always have been. And very brave,” she said.

This perspective aligns with sentiments previously expressed by Daniel Craig, the most-recent actor to portray James Bond. In a 2021 interview, Craig questioned the necessity of casting a woman in the role, suggesting instead that equally compelling roles should be created for women. “Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?” he had said.

The debate over a female Bond continues as the franchise undergoes significant changes. Following Amazon’s acquisition Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s creative control, there is ongoing speculation about the future direction of the series, including potential casting decisions for the iconic spy role.
