BCCI Responds to Bengaluru Stampede

Break10 Web Desk: In the wake of a tragic stampede that occurred during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) Indian Premier League (IPL) victory celebrations, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed deep sorrow and emphasized the need for better planning in such events.

The Bengaluru stampede happened outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium today where thousands of fans had gathered to celebrate RCB’s maiden IPL title win. Overcrowding led to a stampede, resulting in at least 11 dead and more than 50 injured.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia described the event as “totally shocking” and acknowledged lapses in crowd management and safety protocols. He stated, “There have been lapses. The organisers should have planned the celebrations better to ensure the safety of the fans.”

The celebration was initially planned as an open-bus parade but were scaled down due to security concerns. However, the alternate arrangements at the stadium, still attracted massive crowds, putting pressure on the available infrastructure.

The Karnataka government has announced compensation for the victims’ families and initiated an investigation into the incident. Political parties have also weighed in, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticising the Congress-led state government for negligence and inadequate crowd control measures.

This tragedy has cast a shadow over RCB’s historic win, highlighting the critical importance of meticulous planning and safety measures in large-scale public events.
