Shubman Gill India’s New Test Captain, Squad Announced
Break10 Web Desk: In a major leadership transition, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named 25-year-old Shubman Gill as the new Test captain, succeeding Rohit Sharma. Gill is the 37th individual to lead the Indian Test team, heralding a new era as India prepares for a challenging five-match Test series against England, commencing on 20 June at Headingley.
Gill’s appointment is being seen as a forward-looking move by the selectors, aiming to build a youthful leadership that will form the core for the upcoming World Test Championship cycle.
Rishabh Pant has been appointed as the vice-captain. Jasprit Bumrah, who previously served as vice-captain and occasional skipper, was not considered for a leadership role this time to manage his workload and maintain his fitness, given his pivotal role in India’s bowling attack. Mohammad Shami was not considered for the England tour because of his fitness issues.
